The hit show is based on the historical fantasy novels by author Diana Gabaldon and began airing in 2014. It follows Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) after she is transported back in time from 1945 to 1740s Scotland, where she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The penultimate season of Outlander has been broken into two parts. The first half of the season aired on Starz from June to August 2023 and ended with Claire, Jamie and Young Ian (John Bell) returning to their beloved Scotland.

'Outlander' Season 7, Part 2 Cast Guide

Caitríona Balfe as Claire Fraser

Balfe returns as Claire Fraser, a nurse and time traveler who found herself in the past and formed a romantic relationship with Jamie Fraser, a Highland warrior.

In Season 7, Part 2, the Frasers will be wrenched apart once more when Lord John Grey's nephew is injured in the American Revolution and Claire is ordered to go back to America to treat him. Jamie and Claire's marriage will be tested like never before as they face the perils of the armed conflict.

Balfe has taken on increasing roles since the time-traveling saga began nearly a decade ago, having served as an executive producer for the first episode of Season 7, Part 1. Balfe also made her directorial debut this season.

"As the season goes on... there's a couple of episodes where just like the shock of 'what is happening' and having to go back and reading it in the book and being like, 'OK, wait how do we do this?'" Balfe explained at the New York City's Tribeca Film Festival in 2023. "There's lots of things this season that are like that."

Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser

Heughan returns to play Jamie Fraser, a Highlander warrior recognized as a strong commander and future Laird of Lallybroch. He is married to Claire Fraser.

In Outlander Season 7, Part 2, increasing tensions in Scotland put Jamie in danger, and Claire's planned departure to America exacerbates the situation.

As this season moves towards yet another war, Heughan teased at the New York City's Tribeca Film Festival that he and characters William and Lord John Grey, may end up at odds on the battlefield.

"Jamie is on the side of the rebels and Lord John Grey, and maybe, William, are on the other side, maybe," he said. "So there could be some interesting drama to be had there."

Heughan has also taken on an increasing role since the show started, having served as an executive producer for an episode alongside Balfe.

Steven Cree as Old Ian Murray

Steven Cree reprises his role as Old Ian Murray, Jamie's brother-in-law and Jenny's husband, in Outlander Season 7, Part 2. Preview images hint at a tense reunion between Old Ian and his son, Young Ian, in the upcoming episodes.

John Bell as Young Ian Murray

Bell returns as Young Ian Murray, who accompanies Jamie and Claire on their journey back to Scotland. Young Ian finds himself in the throes of a budding romance with Rachel, who is a Quaker, which means she's a member of the Religious Society of Friends.

Eventually, Young Ian's past returns to haunt him, as Arch Bug seeks revenge, believing Ian is responsible for his late wife's death.

Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom

Canadian actor Charles Vandervaart joined the cast of Outlander Season 7 as William Ransom. William is Lord John Grey's son and the ninth Earl of Ellesmere, but completely unknown to him, Jamie is his real father.

The character of William was introduced in Season 3 as the illegitimate son Jamie fathered with Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James). When Geneva and William's supposed father, Ludovic Ransom, died, Jamie's close friend Lord John Grey (David Berry) and his wife Isobel (Tanya Reynolds), who was Geneva's sister, raised him.

By Season 7, Willie is now an adult who arrives in Wilmington with plans to join the British Army, hoping to put an end to the unrest in the British colonies.

David Berry as Lord John Grey

Berry reprises his role as Lord John Grey, the governor of Ardsmuir Prison who fell for Jamie in Season 3. In Season 7, Part 2, Lord John summons Claire to America to treat his ill nephew, an act that separates Jamie and Claire for much of the next eight episodes.

Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel

Izzy Meikle-Small continues her portrayal of Rachel, a Quaker and the love interest of Young Ian, in Season 7, Part 2. As a Quaker, Rachel belongs to the Religious Society of Friends, a historically Protestant Christian group.

In addition to her relationship with Young Ian, Rachel finds herself at the center of an unexpected love triangle, as Jamie's son, William, seems to harbor feelings for her.

Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie

Richard Rankin returns as Roger MacKenzie, the adopted son of Reverend Reginald Wakefield from the 1980s timeline. Roger is on a race against time in the present day to rescue his son, Jeremy, who has been taken by Brianna's dangerous coworker, Rob Cameron.

Sophie Skelton as Brianna Fraser MacKenzie

Sophie Skelton plays Brianna Fraser MacKenzie, Jamie and Claire's second daughter, who remains in the present-day timeline. With Roger and Buck time traveling to the past to find Jeremy, Brianna fends off attacks and protects her daughter, Mandy, while facing a plot by a coworker intent on stealing a stash of gold linked to her ancestors.

Diarmaid Murtagh as Buck MacKenzie

Diarmaid Murtagh stars as Buck MacKenzie, Roger's time-traveling ancestor, who aids him in the search for his missing son.

Kristin Atherton as Jenny Fraser

Kristin Atherton takes over the role of Jenny Fraser, Jamie's sister and Claire's sister-in-law, previously played by Laura Donnelly. Donnelly was unable to return to Outlander due to other commitments.

Jenny reappears in Season 7, Part 2, welcoming Jamie and Claire back to Lallybroch after the war.

Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie

Graham McTavish returns as Dougal MacKenzie, the strong and formidable War Chieftain of Clan MacKenzie.

Nell Hudson as Laoghaire Fraser

Nell Hudson reprises her role as Laoghaire Fraser, a maiden from Castle Leoch who once had romantic feelings for Jamie.

Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan

Lotte Verbeek is back as Geillis Duncan, a time-traveling 20th-century witch and past villain with unresolved conflicts with Claire. Although her character died in an alternate timeline, Roger's time-travel adventures may unexpectedly bring Geillis back.

Andrew Whipp as Brian Fraser

Andrew Whipp reprises his role as Brian Fraser, Jamie and Jenny's father who died years before Jamie met Claire. Brian's return is likely connected to Roger's time-travel journey or could occur through flashbacks.

Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie

Layla Burns returns as Joan MacKimmie, the younger daughter of Laoghaire and Simon MacKimmie. Joan's strong Catholic faith inspires her to leave Scotland and pursue a calling to become a nun.
